Zombie & Scary Clown Makeup Tips

Halloween is finally here and, of course, you want to look your best….in a spooky way, that is. Among the all-time favorites are the zombie and the scary clown look. They can be creepy and fun, and the worse you look, the better your zombie or scary clown costume will actually be. You just need some old ragged or worn clothing and, of course, some great makeup.

The Zombie Look

To pull off a great zombie you will need:

  • White face paint (or other pale foundation), black face paint
  • Eyeliner
  • Eye shadow
  • Fake blood or gray/black lipstick
  • If you decide to go a little fancier, you may want to consider spending some money on Liquid latex and fake scabs and/or other prosthetic and colored contact lenses.

How It’s Done

Start with applying the latex and/or prosthetic to your clean face. If you put the makeup on first, those may not stick to your skin. Then put the white face paint or pale makeup all over your face to give you that undead look.  Don’t worry about the coverage, when it comes to zombies, the messier…the better. Next, use the darker paint around the eyes and your cheek bones. Apply the eyeliner and the dark eye shadow around your eyes. Blood (fake blood, red lipstick) can be dripping from your eyes and should be applied around your mouth.

Latex can add some texture to your face. Either apply it to stretched out skin to create some wrinkles, or use some patches of latex that you can puncture to create the illusion of oozing wounds. Apply red and black makeup or paint around the edges of the “latex wound”. Make sure you aren’t allergic to latex before using it.

Prosthetic and fake scabs are readily available at Halloween stores and online retailers. They are usually latex based and come in all shapes and forms including open wounds, bites and scratch marks. Colored contact lenses can help round up your zombie outfit. Fake teeth or tooth makeup are another way to add some pizzazz to your zombie look.

The Scary Clown Look

To turn into a scary clown you will need:

  • White, black and red face paint
  • Eyeliner
  • Makeup Sponges
  • Fake blood
  • Dark red and black lipstick
  • Depending how far you want to take the look, you can spend a little more money and get a crazy wig or even colored contacts.

How It’s Done

Before you start out, pull your hair out of your face using a hairband or a rubber tie. As you know, clown faces have a lot of shapes, including huge lips, exaggerated eyebrows, and big cheeks. The best way to start your clown makeup is to begin with drawing out the shapes that you will want for your clown. You must decide whether you want to go for a sad clown or a creepy happy clown face. Use a black eyeliner to draw out these shapes first. You could start out with diamond eyes. It helps to make a dot above the arch of your brown on either side of your eye and below your eye on your cheek before drawing the diamond.  Make your lips and mouth appear much bigger by drawing either a huge smile, or a sad mouth around your lips. Don’t forget to draw  exaggerated, maybe frowning brows above your actual brows.

Next, get out your white face paint and cover your whole face with it using a sponge. Just leave out the shapes you have drawn. Once your face is covered in white, using the smaller end of the sponge, fill in the shapes. You can use black face paint for your eyebrows and dark red  for your creepy mouth. Add different shades of red using your lipstick. If you want, you can even draw some huge teeth on your lips, like we did in the picture above. For your diamond eyes, use black eyeliner, or black eye shadow. Now that the basics are done, you can go crazy with your fake blood. You can add it either around your huge fake mouth or pretend to have a head wound.
